Navan family take home prize in healthy eating and gardening challenge for children during lockdown

A Meath family has taken home a prize in a gardening challenge created for primary school students to participate in during the country’s lockdown period. Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles Family Challenge saw over 1,500 families and almost 4,000 children take part in the agriculture and food education body’s popular primary school programme from home during the country’s lockdown period.

Patrick (7), Aoife (5) and Niall O’Donnell (3) from Navan, Co Meath came second place in the national challenge and won a €125 QuickCrop voucher.

Due to the rise in popularity in gardening and interest in planting fruit and vegetables as a result of social distancing during the country’s lockdown period, Agri Aware decided to launch its popular Incredible Edibles Family Challenge programme to primary school children and their families to undertake at home.

For a period of five weeks Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles Family Challenge encouraged families to learn all about where food comes from and the importance of eating Irish fruit and vegetables, for a healthy, balanced diet.

Children carried out five tasks which focused on food origin, the importance of eating Irish fruit and vegetables for a balanced diet, planting their own produce and cooking Irish fruit and vegetables with the supervision of their parent/guardian.

From planting and reusing materials at home to learning facts and getting creative, the Incredible Edibles Family Challenge educated and entertained families of all ages.
