Black Tea For Weight Loss: Does It Work?

Most iced teas are made from black tea concoctions in America. In the scorching heat of summer, drinking a glass of iced tea could be refreshing and rejuvenating. The sugary taste of ice-cold caffeine makes iced tea one of the most popular beverages in the United States.

These sugar-sweetened beverages are not what weight loss experts recommend. It is the hot, unadulterated version of black tea with limited sugar and milk that they are referring to when speaking about weight loss.

Hot Black Tea Varieties

Varieties include Earl Grey, Assam tea and Masala chai, among other choices. Black tea is an ideal beverage to complement Western cuisine. For example, continental breakfast is incomplete without English breakfast tea.

Putting together black tea is a fairly simple task. Take one teaspoon of tea leaves and add it to hot water. Let it steep for two to six minutes, depending on what you are trying to make. Strain the leaves out into a dish before you add milk and sugar to it.

Experts believe that tea brings down inflammation because of high flavonoid content. However, there is some doubt about whether teas can stimulate weight loss due to the presence of caffeine. Although in moderation, black tea may help with weight loss if included in a balanced diet and good exercise regimen. Here is how:

Black Tea And Weight Loss

Black tea, being a highly-oxidized tea, offers a strong flavor, which is what makes it a popular drink. The low calories in an unadulterated cup can’t add to a person’s body weight since a single cup of black tea holds just about 2 calories. Milk, honey and sugar are the ingredients that increase the calories present in a cup of tea. For the least amount of calories, drink black tea with minimum addition.

Tea facilitates metabolism through the flavonoid called catechins, which promote antioxidant activity to inhibit inflammation-induced obesity and heart conditions.

Caffeine also helps the body break down stored fats and metabolize them. How? Caffeine shoots up energy levels, automatically encouraging the body to burn calories through energy expenditure. For this reason, it may be possible that teas could complement a dietary plan aimed at weight loss.

A particular study published by the European Journal of Nutrition found that black tea decreased gut bacteria promoting obesity and conversely increased bacteria stimulating lean body mass.

There is a tendency to become addicted to caffeine since it boosts energy levels that are often down due to sedentary lifestyles therefore it is necessary to not drink too many cups. This is concerning because products do not divulge the amount of caffeine per drink. About 5 to 10 cups or 400 milligrams per day is the recommended limit. Those who have high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats should be careful and consume caffeine in moderation.
